Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most beautiful moments, and capturing those early days through a newborn portrait session is a wonderful way to preserve those fleeting memories. If you’re preparing for your first newborn photography session, this step-by-step guide will help set your expectations and ensure a smooth experience for both you and your little one.

Arrival at the Studio

Billie Roche Photography is a home studio that has a calming atmosphere designed to make you and your baby feel comfortable. I recommend arriving a little early to allow time for settling in. Here’s what to expect upon your arrival:

1. Welcome and Introduction: After a brief introduction, I’ll show you around the studio and see that everything (props, backdrops, outfits, accessories, etc. ) is prepped and all ready for the session.

2. Settling In: Parents can stay in my cozy spot for you to relax while I prepped your baby for the session.

3. Feeding Time: If your little one is due for a feeding or is hungry when I prepped her for the session, then we have to give him/her a feed. A well-fed baby is usually a happy baby, which makes for great photos!

The Session Process

Once your baby is settled, I’ll begin the session. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of what happens next:

1. Safety First: My top priority is the safety and comfort of your newborn. I’ll carefully handle your baby and position them in a way that ensures they feel secure.

2. Posing: I go through my posing workflow and capture a variety of poses, I’ll guide baby through each pose, taking care to keep your baby comfortable and relaxed. If your baby stirs or needs a break, I’ll pause adjust as needed or move on to the next pose. Some babies sleep through the poses but most babies are fussy and sensitive to posing transitions that it takes them a while to settle. I do not force a baby into a pose if they are not having it. lol

3. Family Shots: For newborn family session, capturing the connection between you, your husband with your newborn creates lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Keeping Your Baby Comfortable

I understand that newborns can be unpredictable, and I’m here to make the process as smooth as possible. Here are a few things I do to ensure your baby is comfortable during the session:

• Warm Environment: I keep the studio warm to mimic the cozy environment of the womb, which helps soothe your baby and keeps them relaxed.

• Gentle Handling: I’’ve handled newborns for over 10 years and know how to gently pose and move your baby to ensure their comfort and safety.

• Patience is Key: Every baby has their own rhythm. If your little one needs to eat, be changed, or simply cuddled, we’ll take our time and follow their lead.

As a new parent, it’s normal to feel a bit anxious about the session. Here are some tips to help you relax and enjoy the experience:

4. Stay Flexible: Be prepared for things to not go exactly as planned. Babies can be unpredictable, and that’s perfectly okay! We’ll adjust as needed to ensure everyone is happy and comfortable.
